Our newest trainer in training, Cole, likes to practice holding a sit during mealtimes. Her dogs, Book and Kaylee, are not allowed in the food prep area while she cooks. To keep them focused on her (and not the food), they practice holding their sits until released.
There are several ways to work on staying out of the kitchen. You can also tell your dog to WAIT and body block them as they’re headed towards the kitchen. They can do anything but cross the boundary into the kitchen. You can tell them to SIT, but then remember they need to hold those commands until released. Whatever you decide, you’re never wrong! Having rules to follow makes for happy dogs who always know what the expectations are.
