Honey and Chance are being fed at the same time to demonstrate that they are of equal pack status. Honey, the hound mix, will gobble down her food, then try to steal the rest from her older brother Chance. As pack leader, Tracy is right there to claim Chance and protect his space. She uses her body to block Honey from sneaking in until Chance has time to finish. Stealing food is not good manners, even in the dog world. Honey must learn this or risk an attack from another dog. Giving space is how dogs show respect for one another. By protecting Chance’s space while he eats, Tracy also shows Chance that he has no reason to guard his food. She is protecting it for him, so he can take his time and eat without having to worry about someone sneaking in to steal his food.
Mediating mealtime and teaching these rules and boundaries is a pack leader's job.
Feeding time is a great opportunity to exercise your authority and keep the pack calm and safe.
