We don't always want Oscar jumping & climbing all over us (or our guests) when we are relaxing on the couch, so he is learning how to SETTLE next to us on the floor instead. Oscar is only welcome "UP" by invitation only. When my son wants to snuggle, we tell Oscar "OFF." This exercise also applies out in public places. If I'm eating at a dog-friendly restaurant, I'd prefer Oscar settling politely on the ground instead of trying to jump on my lap at the table. Small dogs are so easy to cuddle with, but they should never demand it. Expect them to behave the same as you would a 100 lb. lab! Good manners apply to all dogs big & small.
