During mealtime at Kersti’s house, her dogs lie down on the mat when it’s time to eat. This allows her to take her time, calmly getting the bowls out, serving everyone’s food, and placing each bowl down. If anyone breaks their “down” command, she walks over and puts them back, then continues what she’s doing. There’s no demanding jumping or barking, just calm, relaxed dogs waiting to eat. Everyone gets to dig in when their release word(s) “All Done” is given.
Whether your dogs eat in their crate, eat in separate areas, or side by side, it’s important to have some sort of routine and expectation around mealtime.
This ensures calm behavior and attention on you!
