Sammy is working on learning to hold a sit at the door, but the first obstacle he must overcome is how to not worry about what's behind him. What seems like such a tiny detail to us is a huge deal to a nervous dog. During his first few days, when Kersti asked Sammy to sit, he would sit but continue to turn in all directions to check out what was around and make sure there was nothing that might get him. For an adult dog to overcome these fears, sometimes it takes a little longer to undo a habit, but the key is calm consistent leadership and follow through. It also helps to have a relaxed dog come along for company. On walks or in the yard, if Sammy was nervous about something, he would look up to see Kersti relaxed and confident, and Rudy beside him relaxed as well. Being surrounded by that energy helped him figure out that being scared doesn’t work and it’s easier to be calm.
