Yesterday we took a trip to Waverly Place in Cary to socialize and practice manners with our dogs. If you haven’t been to Waverly Place, it’s a great spot full of new sorts of distractions!
We always warm up and get the dogs focused by walking circles as a group and practicing commands in the parking lot. Then when everyone is relaxed and the excitement has worn off, we headed into the shopping center. There were lots of obstacles to squeeze in some Canine Parkour moves, and there was a kids play area with some giant fountains around them. All of these things are totally normal to the human eye, but make great tools and distractions to help socialize dogs. Because we had taken the time to warm up before getting to the bigger distractions, the dogs are much more relaxed and paying attention to their handlers. This made the excited children on the playground become background noise instead of a stress to the dogs.
After walking through the gauntlet of distractions, we picked a spot to sit and chat as a group while the dogs settled at our feet. It was a great field trip. The next time you’re looking for a place to go with your dog, check out Waverly Place Shopping Center!
