If you’re looking for a fun new way to reinforce and practice your dog’s manners in public, why not head out to the Raleigh Flea Market? With more pleasant temperatures on the way, this spot makes for a perfect day out with your pup.
The Flea Market also offers great exposure to all different kinds of new sights, sounds, and smells.
Here are Grady and Rosie, two dogs who come regularly for our Continuing Education program. Trainer Jon makes sure they get manners reinforced and makes sure they get lots of practice in public with those manners.
If your dog has lots of energy to burn off, try walking a couple of circles when you first arrive. Don’t worry about rushing your dog to get to where the action is. Instead, take the time to reinforce that everything you do, each new place you go, starts out calm. Add in a couple of sits while you walk circles to gain his or her focus. Once you feel like that initial excitement has leveled, then move forward.
While you’re browsing through neat finds and bargains, your dog will be happy to be by your side without argument.
You can also get lots of practice from the public with polite petting. This is good practice for you too! Ask the approaching person to help with your dog’s training by not petting if he’s jumping, or give them clear instructions to let the dog sniff and then scratch their chin. Remember, you are always right, so advocate for your pup by letting people know how to approach and interact.
