Why yes it is a set up Miss Hollywood! Whether there is food on the counter, kitchen table, coffee table or even the floor, it doesn't mean she can have it.
Hollywood is learning to be more respectful of our space, especially when there is food around. She already knows these social skills when it comes to other dogs in a pack, but they apply to her human pack members also. SIT or DOWN for dinner is a great leadership exercise, especially for kids to do.
Food = Power and Space = Respect.
Hollywood needs to wait for the "Release" or "All done" command for permission to eat. If that was my dinner on the table, she will never get permission! I verbally correct her early with an "Eh-eh" even if she starts to sniff the air. That tells her “don't even think about it!” To keep Hollywood out of trouble, I claim the entire kitchen area when there is food around. Not one paw is allowed past the designated kitchen threshold until we are done eating. If she tries to enter, I use my body to push her back out.
After several attempts, Hollywood now knows this is my territory and I own everything in it. (Except the mess!)
