What makes DTC different from other programs?
Why three weeks?
Because three weeks is the length of time it takes a dog to establish new habits.
Why focus on habits?
Because once your dog's new habits are established, they're easy to maintain and can be kept up with only a little effort.
Why teach the owners?
Because teaching the owners is more than half the battle. Habits are easily broken if not maintained.
What training method do you use?
DTC emphasizes leadership, and then uses whatever method best motivates your dog. Hunting dogs won't necessarily respond to the same methods which work on working dogs, toy dogs, or terriers. We figure out what works best with your dog and individualize the training to achieve the best results. We DO NOT use electronic shock collars.
Will my dog remember me?
YES! And they will also remember all the things they used to get away with. It is imperative you keep up the training we teach you so your dog learns that rules apply with you and at your home as well.
Will my dog’s personality change during training?
No. We are not changing the personality of your dog. If he/she is a goofy dog when he/she left, he/she will still be goofy when he/she returns. Stubborn or feisty? Still stubborn and feisty when he/she returns. The difference is your dog has learned to follow directions no matter what. It is up to you to be more stubborn or feisty than your dog. You got the dog because you liked their personality, and we’re adding to their behavior not taking their personality away.
Where is your office?
We do actually have an office located in Cary, but we don't do any training there. We come to your house for private consultations because that's where the problem is occurring. We pick up and drop off Training Camp dogs at your house so we can see the problems where they're happening, and show you how to fix them. Our classes are held out in the real world so you and your dog learn real world skills. Dogs have situational memories so learning in a classroom makes it harder to transfer those skills to your home or the places you regularly go.
Why is in home board and train better?
We train your dog in our trainers' homes because it's as close as we can get to their home environment. Dogs have situational memory so the closer the situation, the easy it is to transfer their new skills to you.
What qualifications do your trainers have?
Each trainer has made their own journey so exact certifications vary. However, regardless of where they started, each trainer has to pass the Donnie test before they are allowed to handle each type of dog and behavioral issue. This requires many hours of hands on training often over years. Becoming a DTC trainer is an apprenticeship type of training where the master signs off on your skill level. Many trainers today receive a beautiful certificate after doing online training and may not have ever touched a dog. That definitely does not meet Donnie's quality standards!
How and when is payment due?
At least half payment is due at the beginning of training and the remaining balance is due when your dog returns home. You can simply add services to your shopping cart on our web site and check out online. It's quick, easy, and simple.
Can I see my dog during the 3 weeks of Training Camp?
Yes. We simply ask you give us 7-10 days before you come and see them so we can get them in a good routine.
What do I need to pack?
Which trainer is going to be training my dog?
The Training Camp Manager selects a suitable trainer depending on your dog’s breed, age, personality, and the goals you have for them.
